A Cal AI alternative that shows its margin of error
Updated on
FotoMeal is a photo calorie counter that shows its yearly price before you download, starts without a questionnaire, keeps barcode scanning and the journal free, and shows on every photo scan how sure the AI is. Cal AI is faster to recommend if you want Apple Health, Apple Watch and an app with hundreds of thousands of reviews. Facts below were checked on 19 October 2026.
Why people look for a Cal AI alternative
Cal AI is popular for good reasons: 4.8 out of 5 on the US App Store, from 371,396 ratings on the US App Store (shown as 371K), and a fast photo scan. In our reading of 28,826 store reviews across the category (18 October 2026), the most common complaints are not about any one app: price and paywall come first (46.3% of negative reviews), then the long questionnaire before you can use the app, then ads and nagging. If that is why you are here, the table below shows where FotoMeal differs and where it does not.

The price: when you see it, what you pay
FotoMeal has one subscription, yearly, shown on this site and on its store pages before you download: €29.99 a year in the euro area (App Store and Google Play). In other countries the store sets a local price; on Google Play in the US it is currently higher than on the App Store, and we are aligning it. We do not say FotoMeal is cheaper than Cal AI: depending on the country and the plan, it may not be.
The photo estimate
Both apps estimate calories and macros from a photo, and both can be wrong. FotoMeal uses OpenAI's GPT-4o and shows the confidence score the model gives for each estimate, so you know when to check. Cal AI's own FAQ says it is "about 80% accurate". In an NIH study presented at NUTRITION 2026 (not peer reviewed), the photo features of four calorie apps, including Cal AI, underestimated meals by about a third; FotoMeal was not part of that study. What is free
With FotoMeal, barcode scanning (Open Food Facts), food search, manual entry, the journal and 30 days of history are free for life, without an account. The photo scan is Premium, after a 7-day trial. Cal AI's App Store description states that photo scan results require a subscription.
What FotoMeal does not do
- No sync between devices: the journal stays on your phone.
- No import from Cal AI or another app.
- No free photo scans outside the trial.
- No Apple Health, Health Connect or watch app for now.
- No reviews on the stores yet: the iPhone app launched on 18 October 2026.
Who should stay on Cal AI, who should try FotoMeal
Stay on Cal AI if you rely on Apple Health or Apple Watch, if you want a plan built from your answers to lifestyle questions, or if you prefer an app with a long track record of reviews.
Try FotoMeal if you want to start without a questionnaire, see how sure the AI is on every photo, keep barcode scanning and the journal free, and know the yearly price before you download.
Switching from Cal AI to FotoMeal
- Cancel Cal AI in your store's subscription settings (Apple help, Google help). Uninstalling does not cancel.
- Install FotoMeal from the App Store or Google Play.
- Start the 7-day trial if you want the photo scan; barcode, search and journal work without it.
- Set your daily goal. Your Cal AI history does not transfer.
